As excitement builds for the Melbourne Cup, Tamavua resident Vikash Rameshwar said placing a bet is not just about choosing the best horse; the jockey is just as important.

Rameshwar, who has been betting since 2009, says he has seen many ups and downs and won significant amounts, with some payouts reaching more than $450.

“My main bet is on jockey Mark Zara – he won last year. People often focus only on the horse, but sometimes you need to keep an eye on the jockey.”

Grants Betting Sports City branch manager Elishma Narayan added that they are expecting a surge in activity, especially since crowds usually gather after work.

The 2024 Melbourne Cup began this afternoon and ends at 4pm tomorrow.
