This smart new multi-tool made me rethink my entire approach to everyday carry

Here at GP we talk a lot about EDC. That being said, it’s ridiculously easy to get caught up in the “everyday” part of the term, judging a knife, multi-tool, or other small accessory based on how much utility it provides in everyday life.

As convenient as a standard mini multi-tool or multi-tool keychain is, there’s probably nothing easier to set and forget than a simple clip-based item.

As a result, the other part of the equation, the “carryover”, gets a short shift when it really shouldn’t. Because just like a professional athlete’s best ability is accessibility (thanks to Bill Parcells), the most important quality of an EDC item is a form factor that makes it easy to hide and forget about until you need it most.

Case in point: the new Nomad Scout EDC Carabiner multi-tool, which recently hit Kickstarter.

Form factor in focus

I like this project for several reasons. First, Los Angeles-based creator Gabriel A. Keossian has done an excellent job of selecting some important tools. Among the seven it touts are a ferrocerium fire starting rod, a carbide tip that can break glass, a tiny folding blade, a 1/4-inch hex adapter, and, of course, a bottle opener.

Beyond these convenient features, however, I’m even more excited about the form this multi-tool takes: a carabiner. As convenient as a standard mini multi-tool or multi-tool keychain is, there’s probably nothing easier to set and forget than a simple clip-based item.
