Nigeria Health Watch announces Solutions Journalism workshop for Nigerian news editors

Nigeria Health Watch, in partnership with Pan Atlantic University’s School of Media and Communications, is pleased to announce Solutions Journalism Masterclass for Nigerian Newsroom Editorswhich will take place from November 18 to 22, 2024. This four-day masterclass aims to equip Nigerian editors with the skills to take a solutions-oriented approach to news reporting.

The Solutions Journalism Masterclass is part of a broader solutions journalism initiative in Africa. It is intended for newsroom editors who seek to strengthen the impact of journalism in Nigeria by going beyond issue-oriented reporting and demonstrating credible responses to social issues.

“Solutions journalism offers a powerful way for newsrooms to not only report on Nigeria’s problems, but also inspire change by showcasing actionable action,” said Chibuike Alagboso, deputy director of media programs at Niager Health Watch. “We’re excited to partner with Pan-Atlantic University to provide editors with these tools for effective storytelling.”

Solutions Journalism represents a shift in the way news is framed. Instead of focusing solely on problems, this approach emphasizes answers and solutions to those problems. Through the masterclass, editors will have the opportunity to lead their teams in creating stories that are not only informative, but also inspire, engage readers and promote social change.

Participants will learn:

  • Editorial Leadership: How to Help Journalists Write Impactful Stories That Focus on Social Issues.
  • Story Framing: Techniques for transforming news narratives into solutions-based frameworks.
  • Network: Opportunities to connect with leading editors, trainers and media professionals in Nigeria and beyond.

Successful participants will receive a certificate from the Pan Atlantic University School of Media and Communications upon completion of the training.

By embracing solutions journalism, Nigerian newsrooms can promote more balanced storytelling that not only covers problems, but also provides readers with examples of how communities are addressing those problems. This approach encourages deeper debate, influences policy, and ultimately inspires action to create more sustainable societies.

Eligibility and Application

The program is open to editors working in newsrooms in Nigeria, including print, television, radio and digital media. Selected participants must demonstrate a commitment to guiding their newsroom toward solutions-based reporting and teaching journalists how to apply this approach to their storytelling.
