Hong Kong court frees British suspect in Indonesian woman’s murder

A Hong Kong court has remanded in custody a British man accused of killing an Indonesian woman at a waterfall park in the Southern District.

Jamie Zevi Chapman, 34, appeared at Eastern Court on Friday morning to face murder charges in connection with the death of Novitasari Mevi on October 27 at Waterfall Bay Park in Aberdeen.

During the hearing, the prosecution applied for an adjournment to allow time for further investigation.

Chapman’s lawyer did not object to the postponement and did not apply for bail on the Briton’s behalf, and the accused is due to appear in court again on January 24 next year.

“In the meantime, you will remain in prison,” Chief Judge Dong So Man-lung told Chapman.

Under the Criminal Procedure Ordinance, persons accused of murder can only be released on bail on the order of a judge, and a magistrate’s court cannot entertain such a bail application.
