Google Maps Gets New Artificial Intelligence Features Powered by Gemini

Google Maps is getting new features powered by Gemini, Google’s generative AI model. On Thursday, the company announced upcoming updates that will allow Google Maps users in the US to use artificial intelligence to help them find new places to visit and answer questions about different places.

The platform will also have enhanced navigation features that will help motorists get to their destination by highlighting options such as which lane you should be in.

By including Gemini in Maps, Google will be aiming to make its navigation app better able to compete with Apple Maps and navigation startups.

In other updates, Google Maps will allow users to get ideas for where to go and what to do simply by asking the service a question. For example, if you have a friend visiting you, you can ask Maps “what to do with friends at night.” Gemini will then offer a curated list of options, such as bar visits or live music.

To learn more about the places Gemini recommends, users can read a summary of what people think about that place. If you have a specific follow-up question, such as does it have outdoor seating, you can also ask Gemini that.

These new features will be released in the US on Android and iOS this week. Google said it plans to introduce similar capabilities to search, including artificial intelligence-powered review summaries and the ability to ask questions about places.

In terms of new navigation features, Google is making it easier for Maps users to navigate unfamiliar areas with multiple lanes, forks and exits. Google Maps will now clearly display lanes, crosswalks, and road signs on the map. Plus, it will show you exactly which lane you should be in so you don’t have to line up at the last second.

The update will also make it easier to research what there is to do on your route before you start driving. Once you enter your destination, Google Maps will display top attractions, landmarks, scenic spots, and restaurants.

Then, once you reach your destination, Google Maps will show you nearby parking lots. Once you park, the app will remind you to save your parking space so you don’t forget where you left your car. You can also get walking directions from your car to the entrance of your destination, with the option to trigger Street View or AR (augmented reality) walking navigation.

In addition, Google Maps will allow users to see and report weather conditions on the road, such as flooded areas, unplowed areas and areas with poor visibility.

Google also announced that Google Maps’ Immersive View feature, which creates a 3D model of your destination, is rolling out to 150 cities around the world. As part of the expansion, the feature will be launched in Brussels, Kyoto and Frankfurt, among other new locations.
