Crow Fest 2024 runs through November 9 at the Mansfield Arts Center.

MANSFIELD — Visitors have less than two weeks to see nearly 200 pieces of crow-inspired art at the Mansfield Arts Center.

The third annual Crow Fest show features paintings, sculptures, interactive art and more. On Saturday, the art center held an opening day and announced awards for 10 pieces, presenting the artists with glass pumpkins from MAC.

Jennifer Beavis, MAC’s director of marketing, thanked the Mansfield Arts Center staff and volunteers for moving artwork from the Nearness of Destiny exhibit and organizing the Crow Fest displays on the first and second floors of the building.

“We thought about not doing Crow Fest this year because of our schedule and how busy it would be, but all these incredible artists wanted to participate again,” she said. “The art is breathtaking and I’m very happy with how it turned out.”

Beavis said Saturday’s opening ceremony drew performers from all over Ohio and as far away as Chicago.

“Our raven lords are pleased,” said Beavis.

MAC staff also announced the following awards on Saturday:

  • 3D Work Award: Thomas Baldwin, Altered Landscape.
  • Mixed Media Award: Mindy Duncan, This and Nothing More.
  • Painting Award: Amber J. Evans, “Bedroom Treasure.”
  • Technical Excellence Award: Evangelia Filippidis, “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.”
  • Innovation Award: Autumn Cadle, “Invasive Desolation.”
  • Best Picture “The Crow”: Daniel Macdonald, “Son’s Man.”
  • “The Crow’s Choice”: Evelia Sovash, “Aerial: Honey Sky.”
  • Size and detail: Mary Holobaugh, Watering Hole.
  • Funniest Crow: Will Oberdier, “The Rookie Couple.”
  • Staff Pick: Darla Logan Stampfley, Where the White Crows Go.

Australian Professor Wins Best in Crow Award

Daniel MacDonald, chair of Ashland University’s Department of Art and Design and professor of sculpture, received the “Best Crow” award for his sculpture “Son’s Man.”

The steel sculpture is equipped with binoculars, allowing viewers to view a replica of his son Milo’s ultrasound.

“This article is about how I felt when my wife and I found out we were having a fourth child,” he said. “Cute is 14 now.

“At that time we didn’t know what to do: we had two cars that could accommodate five people, and our family was supposed to have six people. This article explores the positive and nervous reactions to something like this.

“The title of the play is a play on the biblical reference to the Son of Man and God.”

Beavis said MAC employees were surprised by McDonald’s performance.

“We thought it would be a small play, but it blew our minds when he told us about it and we brought it in – it’s amazing,” she said.

Next year’s Crow Fest will feature artwork at the Arts Center for six weeks, and Beavis said the Arts Center plans to bring back the masquerade ball.

The art center will be showcasing Crow Fest art through November 9th. The art center is located at 700 Marion Ave. and is open from 11:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and from 11:00 to 16:00 on Sunday.
