Chagos deal proves Falkland Islands can become Argentina again, country’s president says

Grant Shapps, the former defense secretary, said Downing Street should “hang its head in shame” and that Britain’s position on the world stage was undermined.

“The emergency sale of Chagos is a national disgrace. It is so obvious that this Government should hang its head in shame for having seriously undermined Britain’s international standing and put British citizens at risk in other parts of the world.”

Marc Francois, a former minister for the armed forces, added: “The decision to surrender the Chagos Islands is not only a strategic disaster, it will inevitably embolden Argentina to renew its false claim to the Falkland Islands.

“This poor government is completely naive when it comes to security and foreign policy, and our adversaries see it clearly.”
