Russell Wilson on George Pickens: Great catch, maybe worth counting on the same foot twice

The Steelers had to settle for three field goals in the first half of Monday’s game against the Giants, and two of those kicks came after an apparent touchdown reception by George Pickens was cleared from the field.

The first penalty negated the first, and a replay took care of the second after it showed Pickens had his right foot on the playing field before being pushed out. Pickens put his foot down twice, but NFL rules don’t count that as putting both feet down or one knee, elbow or other body part down on the playing field.

This is an unusual occurrence, and quarterback Russell Wilson said in his postgame press conference that he thinks it’s something to watch in the future.

“His interesting ruleWilson said. “Obviously we thought maybe he had sprained his toe, maybe he had broken it. We put the same foot down twice and clearly one and then another one, number 2, it’s almost like you drop your knee and it counts as a touchdown. And getting two rights might be worth considering. But I don’t know. George played a great game. I know it’s obvious he wants those two touchdowns. We all want it – for us it would really break the game early on. He made two great catches.”

Pickens completed four catches for 74 yards, and Wilson finally got a touchdown to count in the second half, helping the Steelers to a victory that made it much easier to question whether league rules were adequately handling the Pickens situation.
