Giants appear to be benching Deonte Banks as first-rounder’s disappointing season hits new low

Deonte Banks appears to be stuck on the bench.

The struggling sophomore cornerback, who was drafted 24th overall by the Giants last year, was replaced by Greg Stroman in the second quarter of the Monday Night Football game against the Steelers.

Banks was benched after being blocked in the path of running back Najee Harris on a big Steelers run, which reportedly led to head coach Brian Daboll chasing him down the sideline “pretty heavily.”

Banks’ injury was not reported.

At the time, the Giants were down 9-6.

Banks was also unable to start the second half.

Stroman was a seventh-round draft pick by Washington in 2018 and signed with the Giants’ practice squad last offseason.

The Giants released him from the practice squad on Monday.

Banks, however, returned a touchdown early in the game, pushing Steelers receiver George Pickens out of bounds.

Notably, Banks was called out twice earlier this season for his efforts.

During the Giants’ Week 4 loss to the Cowboys, Banks was yelled at by defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson after he gave up while chasing CeeDee Lamb for a 55-yard touchdown.

Last week, Banks waived another play, this time from Jalen Hurts.

Head coach Brian Daboll said last week that he would not suspend or bench Banks and that the matter was being handled internally.
