The Jets’ Super Bowl excitement was sky-high with hopes of returning the Lombardi Trophy to the franchise for the first time 55 years ago in Super Bowl III.

Barring an unforeseen miracle, Gang Green’s Super Bowl drought will continue.

Despite the return of pass rusher Hason Reddick, a full week of practice for recently acquired Davante Adams and being the favorite on the road, the Jets fell short again.

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson scored the game-winning touchdown — his second of the day — to give the Patriots a 25-22 upset win over the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Today should have been different for Gang Green, but it wasn’t. In fact, these were the same problems that plagued them during this now five-game losing streak.

Place kicker Greg Zuerlein missed two more kicks, including an NFL-leading sixth missed field goal, and the team committed eight more accepted penalties, continuing to lead the NFL in penalty yards.

The Green gang allowed the Patriots, one of the worst scoring offenses in the NFL, to score a season-high 25 points, including 18 in the second half from backup QB Jacoby Brissett, ending New England’s five-game skid.

After a major upset, the Jets are now back to a modest 2-6 in the AFC East basement, having won two of their first three games to start the year. Based on tiebreakers, only the Tennessee Titans have a worse record in the AFC than the Gang Green.

The Jets now have a short week as they return home to face the AFC South-leading Houston Texans, 6-2, on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.

Here’s our live updates and analysis for the Jets vs. Patriots Sunday afternoon in Week 8:

Looking to score, the Jets easily put together their best score of the day, with backup running back Braylon Allen scoring from two yards out as the see-saw battle continues in Foxboro.

Patriots kicker Joey Sly kicks a 23-yard field goal as the second half continues to see back-and-forth changes in the lead.

As the Jets look to extend their slim lead, Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein misses a 44-yard field goal.

The tough year continues for the 36-year-old, who has already missed an NFL-best six field goals this season and the extra point that came earlier in the game.

Even in a short week when they host the Texans at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night, don’t be surprised if the Jets finally move on from Zuerlein and add a new offensive lineman to the lineup.

The Jets took the lead again after kicker Greg Zuerlein kicked a 29-yard field goal.

On a seven-play, 59-yard drive, the highlight came on the first play of the possession when quarterback Aaron Rodgers found receiver Garrett Wilson for a 35-yard gain to send the ball deep into Patriots territory.

Despite QB Drake May being sidelined for the rest of the game with a concussion, the Patriots took the field and scored on their first drive of the second half.

That was thanks in large part to a 62-yard punt return by Marcus Jones that got New England all the way to the Jets’ 26-yard line.

Five plays later, Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson scored from three yards out to take the lead.

Gang Green led again after QB Aaron Rodgers hit WR Xavier Gipson for a one-yard score.

The touchdown was set up in part by a combination between Rodgers and receiver Garrett Wilson, as the duo connected for the first time today on a 27-yard catch all the way to the one-yard line.

The Jets find the end zone when QB Aaron Rodgers threads the needle and finds tight end Tyler Conklin for six points late in the first quarter.

However, the fielding woes continued for punter Greg Zuerlein, who missed his first extra point of the year, but his sixth kick overall of the season, which continues to be brutal for the 13-year veteran.

The Jets, in particular, got some help on this trip, with only 30 yards in penalties against the Patriots defense.

The Patriots opened the scoring with a 10-play, 77-yard drive that ended with QB Drake May rushing for a 17-yard touchdown.

Penalties continue to be an issue for the Jets, who extended their league lead in penalty yards with two running violations.

The Gang Green couldn’t get anything going on their first drive, despite a 40-yard punt return by Xavier Gipson that gave the Jets excellent field position at the Patriots’ 47-yard line.

The Jets’ first drive went just two yards on three plays.

Prediction for the New York Jets – Patriots match

Choice: Jets 27, Patriots 13

There are no excuses here. The Jets should and must win this game to have any hope of playing football in late January against a clearly inferior Patriots team that could end the season with the worst record in the NFL. Multiple injuries to Gang Green’s defense may be a concern here, but ultimately Rodgers and company get the job done to keep their slim playoff hopes and chance at winning the AFC East alive with a two-point win in Foxboro.
