China highly appreciates Russia’s position on Taiwan – MFA – World

BEIJING, November 25. /TASS/. China highly values Russia’s position on Taiwan and opposes using the Taiwan issue to restrain Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a briefing.

Commenting on the statements of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko in an interview with TASS that “the Taiwan issue is solely within the competence of China,” the diplomat emphasized that “China highly values Russia’s commitment to the “one China” principle and opposes any attempts to use Taiwan will restrain China”.

She also affirmed that “the ‘one China’ principle is the general consensus of the international community and the fundamental norm of foreign affairs.”

Taiwan has been governed by a local administration since 1949, when the remaining Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island after losing the Chinese Civil War. Since then, Taiwan has retained the flag and some other symbols of the Republic of China that existed on the mainland before the communists came to power. Beijing views the island as one of its provinces, a position supported by most countries, including Russia.
