American rock band Pearl Jam completed the final show of their Dark Matter world tour in Sydney on November 23. The members put on a rousing performance at ENGIE Stadium, presenting a set of 27 songs, including hits, deep tracks and typical covers. However, during the musical evening, the audience witnessed two memorable and nostalgic incidents. One of them was Pearl Jam’s rendition of the 1991 song “Hunger Strike,” originally recorded by Temple of the Dog. Second was Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who paid tribute to legendary singer-guitarist Bruce Springsteen by performing a cover of his 1986 hit No Surrender.

According to NME, Pearl Jam have covered Hunger Strike for the first time in 10 years. Their last live performance of the song was in October 2014 at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit. At the concert, Pearl Jam shared the stage with late Temple of the Dog frontman Chris Cornell. However, when Cornell died in 2017, the band still refrained from performing the track.

Interestingly, Eddie Vedder also remembered Bruce Springsteen on the final leg of his Dark Matter World Tour, lending his vocals to No Surrender. The last time he performed the song was in New Jersey in June 2006. The audience at Vedder’s Sydney concert watched as he performed with an acoustic guitar, paying tribute to the song’s original creator. He called Springsteen a “great friend… and brother,” saying that if he weren’t busy with his world tour, he would have attended Springsteen’s world tour in Vancouver.

“Bruce Springsteen is a magician, he makes magic, and he works hard to make magic. And sometimes it’s easy for him to do magic, but he also has songs of power,” Eddie Vedder told the crowd in Sydney.

This isn’t the first time Pearl Jam has put their personal spin on other artists’ songs. Last month, the band teamed up with Eddie Veddar’s daughter Harper to perform a cover of Taylor Swift’s “The Best Day” at Ohana Fest.

Pearl Jam, founded in 1990, currently consists of five members – Eddie Veddar, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron.
