6 things to know at dawn on Friday, November 22

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – First Alert 6 Daybreak has the headlines you need to know to start Friday.

Man to stand trial in deadly South Omaha shooting

A man is scheduled to appear in court Friday in connection with a shooting that left one person dead in South Omaha.

Dak Lam, 22, was arrested in Westminster, Colorado, on November 4 after Omaha police issued a warrant.

He is now back in Omaha to face trial, according to a report sent Thursday.

Lam faces a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Kea Paljor.

Paljor was shot and killed Oct. 12 near 29th and T streets in Omaha. He died in the hospital.

Police make arrest in connection with crash in downtown Omaha

Omaha police have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run in downtown Omaha earlier this week.

Jerry Herrera, 27, was booked on one count of leaving the scene of an accident with injury resulting in serious bodily injury, as well as two unrelated warrants.

The community helped find Herrera after images of the suspicious vehicle, a 2000 or 2001 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition, were released, authorities said.

The crash happened in the area of 40th and Cuming Streets around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Law enforcement officials say the pedestrian was crossing an intersection “controlled by a traffic light with a marked crosswalk.”

The driver, identified by police as Herrera, did not stop. The pedestrian is in hospital with serious injuries.

Omaha police say domestic violence is ‘common’ after another incident

Omaha police say domestic violence is “unfortunately widespread” after another similar incident ended in gunfire Wednesday night.

A woman called police to report that a suicidal man had a gun pointed at his head.

OPD says they found the man on the front porch of the home and told him he wouldn’t drop the gun after negotiations.

An officer shot him and he is now in critical condition. The shooting is under investigation.

This is the third high-profile domestic incident that metro law enforcement has responded to in the past couple of weeks.

The OPPD Council approved a salary increase

The Omaha Public Power District board of directors voted 6 to 1 to double salaries, setting them between $26,000 and more than $30,000, starting next year.

OPPD said the board raised salaries for the first time since 2005.

However, some have criticized the salary increases, saying that while board members do deserve higher salaries, they believe they should be raised gradually rather than doubled all at once.

The board also discussed the proposed rate increase presented earlier this week.

“If approved, monthly bills for private customers will increase by 8.4 percent. So if your average monthly bill is $100, you’ll have to pay an extra $100 for the year,” First Alert 6’s Joe Harris reports.

Nebraska football players prepare for game in Wisconsin

“For the second year in a row, Nebraska and Wisconsin are 5-5 on the season as they battle head-to-head for the Liberty Trophy,” First Alert 6’s Grace Boyles reports.

The Huskers have only two more opportunities for a sixth win: Saturday against Wisconsin and next week against Iowa.

Saturday marks Dana Holgerson’s second game as the Nebraska football team’s offensive coordinator.

It’s also Senior Day for the Huskers, when more than 20 players will be honored in pregame festivities.

“The 2024 senior class features eight fifth- and sixth-year players, including five players completing their sixth season as a Husker,” Boyles reports.

Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. in Lincoln and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

RiverFront is preparing for holiday celebrations

Omaha Riverfront crews worked this week to install a Christmas tree in America’s Heartland.

8th Street will reopen Friday after a process that involved a large crane was completed.

RiverFront is also preparing an ice skating rink and plans to host an upcoming opening celebration.

Holiday lights were also installed in the area this week.
