The United States, China and the EU are already in a race to secure the supply chains of these CRMs, while producing countries such as Chile and Indonesia are rapidly nationalizing their mining industries to ensure that demand for these materials does not create a new form of colonialism . JULIE KLINGER, author of Rare Earth Frontiers (Cornell University Press, 2018), has researched CRM in key territories around the world. In conversation with IWM Rector MISHA GLENNIE, she argues that unless countries collaborate to mine, process and use these metals, we have no chance of achieving our ambitious climate goals.
