Davion Thompson of Bolingbrook

It was incredibly difficult not to put Thompson’s teammate JT Pettigrew here, as the senior and Valparaiso commit is one of the best players in the state. But Thompson is already one of the best players in the country, as well as in the 50 states. He already has an offer from Illinois after averaging 19 points and five rebounds per game last season. Last year, Bolingbrook made it further into the sectional finals than any other team in the region, but not as far as they would have liked. Now Thompson, Pettigrew and junior Trey Brost will try to lead them even further.

Seneca junior guard Paxton Girtz is the 2023-24 Times Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Girtz is already one of the best players in Irish history, having scored 1,700 points in his career. With 148 more points, he would break the school record of 1,847 set by Seth Evans. The senior averaged 21 points per game last year, but he also dished out seven assists per game as the Irish won 23 games and reached the regional final. Girtz will look to end his career on a high note.

Morris' Jack Wheeler will face the Ottawa defense on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Kingman Gym.

Is there anything this child isn’t good at? One of the best tight ends in football, he is considered a two-star prospect in the sport. But he won’t play football in college because he has already committed to play baseball for Illinois. To top it all off, he averaged 21 points and seven rebounds per game last season, topping 1,000 points, and scored over 30 points five times, including a season-high 36… twice. Expect Wheeler to lead Morris deep into the playoffs again.

Benet's Gabriel Sularski (25) goes to the basket against Oswego East's Mason Lockett IV (2) and Noah Mason (back) during the Oswego East Class 4A regional basketball final at Oswego East High School on Friday. February 23, 2024.

The transfer portal may not exist in high school, but if it did, it would be the biggest playground for any team in Illinois. Several publications rank Sularski as one of the top 75 players in the country, and 247Sports lists him as the top junior recruit in the state. He received interest from Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Notre Dame. This all happened while he was a Benet player, but now he is moving to Lemont to give a huge boost to an already talented team.

Year after year, the Tigers produce one of the best players in the region, and this year was no exception. Coach Jeremy Kreiger said eight of the 12 players on the roster have received either offers or interest from Division I universities. That group is led by Gross, who has five Division I offers from Northern Illinois, Toledo, Kent State, Illinois State and Arkansas State. He will be counted on again as the Tigers look to continue their recent streak of outstanding postseason performance.
