WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – More than 3,600 scientists from more than 100 countries have created an early map of approximately 37.2 trillion cells, taking a major step in “understanding the human body.”

Researchers analyzed more than 10,000 people for the project, which was originally launched in 2016, according to several papers published in Nature and related journals.

“Cells are the basic unit of life, and when something goes wrong, it’s our cells that go wrong first,” said Aviv Regev, founding co-chairman of Human Cell Atlas and executive vice president of research and early development at Genentech. . .

“The problem we faced was that we didn’t know cells well enough to understand how variants and mutations in our genes actually affected disease. With this map, we will be able to better find the causes of disease.”

Researchers hope the high-resolution cell atlas will help doctors identify diseases, understand how genes work and how cells develop, and discover new treatments.

The final version of the atlas is expected to be released in 2026 and will detail the location, identity and function of cells found in the body’s organs and systems.
