New Gulfport subdivision on old William Carey campus approved despite strong opposition

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – The Gulfport Planning Commission has voted to approve a new subdivision on a former school site.

20 acres off Service Drive, on land that was formerly William Carey University, has been approved for 62 residential units.

Before approval, a group of residents from nearby communities voiced their concerns about the proposed plan.

Public concerns included traffic on Service Drive, the density of the area’s development and doubts that developers would sell the homes.

No matter what it was about, the development and legal team had an answer to almost every question.

“They won’t be able to dictate to the developer what he can and can’t do under your laws,” said Robert Schwartz, an attorney representing landowner Robert B. Heinrich.

The commission voted unanimously to approve the subdivision on the condition that the Mississippi Department of Transportation approve Service Drive due to any safety concerns associated with the new development.
