Wisconsin man who faked his own death found in Europe has no intention of returning home

GREEN LAKE, Wis. — Authorities have made contact with a Wisconsin man who went missing in August after faking his own death. Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said they spoke with 45-year-old Ryan Borgwardt, who confirmed he was safe in the apartment.

Police, however, do not know exactly where Borgwardt is, only that he is somewhere in Eastern Europe. The video, which appears to have been filmed by Borgwardt, was shown during Thursday’s news conference and shows him saying he was not injured.

“The good news is we know he’s alive. The bad news is we don’t know where exactly Ryan is and he hasn’t decided to come home yet,” Podoll said. “Ryan and I spoke almost daily.”
