Five-star LSU football committee cancels Texas Longhorns visit, contacts LSU

Missouri City (Texas). In August, Hightower cornerback Cade Phillips switched his commitment from the Texas Longhorns to Brian Kelly’s LSU Tigers, giving the program another coveted cornerback.

Phillips, who has risen sharply in the recruiting rankings over the past year, chose LSU as a mid-range four-star prospect.

Then, in one of the latest recruiting rankings updates, Phillips earned his fifth star and became the No. 4 defensive tackle in America, according to On3 Sports.

He has reached elite status and programs across the country continue to promote the Lone Star State native.

With the recent news that five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood has switched his commitments from the LSU Tigers to the Michigan Wolverines, it’s no secret that the LSU program is in a vulnerable spot.

Now, programs have begun looking to turn other prospects around the Bayou Bengals around.

That includes five-star guard Cade Phillips.

Reports recently surfaced that Phillips was set to head to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, with Steve Sarkisian and company insisting he return to the program.

Phillips confirmed to LSU Tigers On SI that he will not be visiting Texas. this weekend and will stay home on Saturday. The five-star prospect will return to Baton Rouge next weekend for an unofficial visit to LSU to complete the recruiting process.

The Longhorns saw a vulnerability in the program, upped the ante for Phillips and ultimately saw the No. 4 quarterback in America remain committed to the LSU program.

Phillips will now return to Baton Rouge for the Oklahoma game next weekend at Tiger Stadium.

This is big news for Kelly’s program, but what about the other coveted prospects?

Following the news that Underwood was moving to Michigan, America’s No. 1 running back Harlem Berry issued a statement.

America’s No. 1 running back speaks out:

Metairie (La.) Five-star running back from St. Martin’s Episcopalian Harlem Berry announced his commitment to Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers on Jan. 3, a decision that has had a ripple effect on the recruiting process.

Since then, the Bayou Bengals have added pledges from Bryce Underwood (#1 QB), DJ Pickett (#1 CB) and several other top prospects.

On Thursday, Underwood, who announced his commitment to LSU on Jan. 6 after Berry, made public the decision that he will transfer from the LSU Tigers to the Michigan Wolverines.

The news comes on the heels of the Wolverines reportedly raising zero more than $10.5 million in four years.

Now LSU has lost a commitment from the No. 1 quarterback in America, and all attention turns to the Tigers hoping to retain the 2025 recruiting class.

All eyes are now on Berry, the No. 1 running back in America, and Pickett, the top running back in the country, along with a few others.

As for Berry, he publicly responded to the news of Underwood’s move to Michigan:

Berry has remained loyal to LSU since declaring his commitment to the program. He made several appearances in Baton Rouge on game days and also assisted the Tigers in recruiting.

Now his Underwood counterpart has made the final decision regarding the Michigan Wolverines’ services. He will put pen to paper on December 4th during the early signing period after an aggressive zero offer.
