An MLB insider believes the Red Sox could feasibly acquire two of their best starters this offseason.

The Boston Red Sox entered this offseason with a clear need for starting pitching, despite their 2024 rotation exceeding expectations.

With a ton of money freed up and talented young players/prospects available to move, the Red Sox have unlimited opportunities to add a top starter through free agency or a trade.

However, ESPN’s Jeff Passan believes Boston could do both before the start of the 2025 MLB season.

“They have the ability and ability to do it (add a starter or two),” Passan said on the “Baseball Tonight” podcast with Buster Olney. “They could very easily go out and sign Max Fried and then trade him for Garrett Corchet. . This is a very real possibility.”

Fried, 30, is coming off an All-Star season, the second of his career, where he posted a 3.25 ERA and 1.164 WHIP while striking out 166 batters in 174 1/3 innings over 29 starts. He could also be convinced to join the Red Sox to reunite with high school teammate Lucas Giolito, who missed the entire 2024 season with an elbow injury.

Crochet, 25, also made the All-Star Game last season, his first as a starter. He appeared in 32 games for the Chicago White Sox, which finished with the most losses in MLB history. In 146 innings, he posted a 3.58 ERA and 1.068 WHIP while striking out 209 batters.

If the Red Sox can part with the young player and prospects of Crochet and give him and Fried long-term deals, they should be contenders for the foreseeable future. And in 2025, Boston’s rotation could include Crochet, Fried, Giolito, Tanner Houck and Brian Bello. That might have been the best record in baseball.
