Benjamin Akoto

Sampa, (W/R), November 22, GNA – Various Parliamentary Candidates (PCs) contesting the 2024 elections in Jaman North Constituency of Bono Region have reiterated their commitment to increase cashew prices if they win the Parliamentary seat. December 7.

The PCs made the promise when they took turns presenting their views to voters at a parliamentary debate organized by the National Commission for Citizens Commission (NCCE) Director of Jaman North District in Sampa, the cashew producing town of the district.

These include Frederick Yaw Ahenkwa of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as well as the current Member of Parliament for the region, Mr. Martin Kwame Antwi, the candidate of the New Forces Movement.

Mr. Enoch Nyarko, PC of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was absent from the debate, which provided an opportunity for the PC to interact and share his views with voters.

According to Mr. Ahenkwa, PC NDC, there was a need for a regulation to establish a standard price for cashew and he approached the Forest Crops Development Authority (TCDA) to seek such regulation.

He noted that cashew revenues in the country are gradually exceeding cocoa revenues, emphasizing the need for such regulation to benefit farmers.

Mr. Ahenkwa said the next NDC government plans to establish a Cashew Marketing Board to accelerate the growth and development of the cashew sector so that the nation can reap optimal benefits.

According to him, Mr. Antwi, a candidate of the New Forces Movement, noted that increasing cashew prices will allow farmers to plant more and increase productivity, as well as attract many working youths to cashew farming as a business.

He said that with the establishment of the Cashew Board, children of cashew farmers will have access to educational scholarships and stressed his commitment to push for the establishment of the Board once elected as an MP.

Earlier in his welcome speech, Mr. Oscar Kwabena Donkor, NCCE Director, Jaman North District, warned PCs and political parties against vote buying, which remains inimical to the growth of national democracy.

He called on voters to analyze the policies of the PC and political parties so that they can make informed decisions on December 7.

Mr. Donkor called on everyone to help stop the spread of misinformation and disinformation by verifying or cross-checking information before spreading it.

Discussions focused on education, employment, health, roads, economics and agriculture.
