Villagers hold two policemen hostage and accuse them of extortion

Meerut (UP): The two policemen were taken hostage by locals who accused them of extorting money and also beat them, officials said.

Sub-Inspector Satyendra and trainee Sub-Inspector Shivam, posted at Parikshitgarh police station, were taken hostage and beaten up at Govindpuri village on Saturday evening. On receiving information, police from several police stations reached the spot, they added.

The villagers staged a ruckus with the cops for hours, alleging that Sub-Inspector Satyendra had been harassing the shopkeepers for days. According to villagers, every day he extorted money from someone and threatened to send them to prison if people objected.

The villagers also demanded the removal of the sub-inspectors and the drawing up of a report. District (Rural) Naveen Shukla somehow pacified the villagers and ensured that both the accused policemen were brought to book.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Vipin Thada told PTI that villagers have accused both sub-inspectors of extortion. He said Sadar’s security officer has been asked to investigate the matter.
