Accepting the award, Hayek recalled the early days of her career. The actress explained that she was told it would be difficult for her to find leading roles due to her Mexican heritage.

“My immediate reaction was, ‘Oh my God, my characters are stupid,'” she said. “Who will look at the Mexicans? Let’s start with the 50 million Latinos living in this country. It didn’t occur to them.”
