Utah Tech attack suspect caught on camera fleeing scene after police arrive

Utah Tech Police have arrested a sexual assault suspect who was caught on camera fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed that the victims of the attacks on Friday morning were young female students living in campus residence halls.

After Halloween on campus, a former student allegedly had unauthorized entry into dorm rooms, raising serious concerns about student safety.

KUTV spoke with Police Chief Wes LiCalsi about the ongoing investigation and the university’s efforts to support students and improve campus safety.

The suspect, 22-year-old Alex Barajas, gained key card access to a campus building and entered three separate dorm rooms at Campus View Suites I, police said.

Utah Tech students Noah and Hunter expressed shock at the incident.

“It’s just terrible,” Noah said.

“This is something that definitely should never happen,” Hunter said. “Of course, this is unpleasant to hear. This is something that needs to be fixed.”

Police reports indicate that around 3 a.m., after a Halloween dance, Barajas allegedly assaulted three female students.

LiCalzi explained that the first call came from one of the victims, and when police arrived, two more victims showed up.

“The other two have already happened. And then when the officer arrived, which happened very quickly, the suspect. . . escaped through another exit,” Licalzi said.

While a key card is required to gain access to the building, LiCalzi noted that individual dorm rooms were likely left unlocked, allowing the suspect entry. The victims lived on the same floor of the dormitory, although it is unclear whether they knew each other personally.

“Obviously they need support now,” LiCalzi said. “We spent time communicating with parents and the various resources they have available, creating trauma-informed interviews.”

The police chief also stressed the importance of campus safety and urged students to remain vigilant.

“We tried to make it as easy as possible for us to call. We just need that call to help,” he said. “Situational awareness is key; being aware of your surroundings can make a big difference.”

Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Utah State Troopers Department at 435-627-4300.

Students affected by the events or seeking support can access counseling and resources at the Utah Tech Booth Tech Wellness Center by coming inside or calling 435-652-7755.

The suspect had a previous criminal record, although he did not study at the university. He faces three charges of rape, three charges of burglary, two charges of obscenity and one charge of criminal trespass.

Utah Tech Police continues to investigate and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
