Grant Williams reveals what dinner he prepared for the Celtics before departure

As the Celtics and Hornets met in Charlotte, it was a rare opportunity for former teammates to catch up. Initially, Grant Williams was cooking for some of his old Celtics friends for dinner after Friday’s game. It was a chance to catch up with old friends at Williams’ house as the C’s and Hornets were scheduled to play on Friday and then Saturday.

But after Williams fouled Jayson Tatum on a tough play, resulting in a flagrant-2 foul and an ejection, his old C’s teammates likely won’t want to break bread. Speaking with NBC Sports Boston’s Kayla Burton after the game, Williams revealed the food he prepared for the visiting Celtics.

“I’m guessing most of the guys won’t come to dinner tonight,” Williams said. – Tomorrow I will talk to them again. I had my wings ready and everything, so it’s funny that the game ended that way. But I’ll see them again tomorrow. We will compete again. We’re on different sides now, so we’ll have to compete.”

So, unfortunately, it looks like Williams will be left with a fair amount of leftovers. The Celtics were unhappy with their former teammate, including Jaylen Brown saying he believed the foul was intentional and calling it a football play. Brown was the first Celtic to confront Williams on the ground after he fouled Tatum.

Williams spent the first four seasons of his career with the Celtics after being selected in the 2019 draft. But the C’s didn’t want to pay him a new contract, so they signed a deal with the Mavericks. The Mavs then traded Williams to his hometown Hornets at last year’s deadline, where he has been ever since. During his time in Boston, Williams made many friends, including Tatum. Williams stressed that he is still “close friends” with Tatum, adding that he believes they are fine after the hard foul.

Williams wasn’t the only Hornets player ejected from Friday’s game, as Miles Bridges was also ejected with 33.9 seconds left in the game. The Hornets played the Celtics close throughout the game, making 39.6% of their three-point attempts. But they exploded on site, causing Williams to be ejected. The C’s and Hornets will now meet on Saturday at 6:00 pm to complete the back-to-back, so it’s at least an interesting point for the upcoming game.

“I don’t think anyone thought there was any malice just because you didn’t see anyone running up to me,” Williams told reporters. “JB was upset because you don’t want to hurt your teammate or anything like that, and I understand that. In my opinion, there was nothing that complicated or deliberate.”
