What a Kamala Harris presidency would look like, according to ChatGPT, Grok

Newsweek asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Elon Musk’s Grock to predict what a Kamala Harris presidency would look like as AI bots envision progressive social reforms and health initiatives coupled with strong international alliances.

Both chatbots suggested that a vice presidential-led administration could prioritize progressive reforms on social equity, health care and economic policy while maintaining a strong stance on foreign affairs, especially supporting democratic institutions and addressing climate change.

ChatGPT and Grock suggested that Harris’ White House would be marked by a mix of continuity with the Biden administration and the introduction of separate initiatives reflecting her personal priorities.

Domestic policy: emphasis on social equality and economic reforms

ChatGPT expected the Democratic presidential candidate to “focus on social justice and civil rights,” highlighting her “strong support for the Equality Act, which would expand anti-discrimination protections for LGBT+ Americans in employment, housing and public accommodations.”

The generative AI chatbot mentioned her commitment to health care reform, predicting that she would propose “making insulin and health care more affordable” and “creating a National Health Equity Initiative to eliminate health disparities affecting minority groups.”

Grock repeated this, but went deeper into economic policy. It suggested that Harris could solve the housing crisis by “building millions of new homes and providing down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers,” potentially involving “both federal funding for housing projects and incentives for private sector participation.”

In terms of combating inflation and the rising cost of living, Grock predicted she could “adopt policies to combat price gouging, particularly on food, through a federal ban” and consider “expanding the child tax credit.”

Both models agreed with Harris’ commitment to reproductive rights. Grock noted that “given her position on abortion rights, one would expect strong support for laws protecting those rights, perhaps pushing for federal legislation if Roe v. Wade remains cancelled.”

ChatGPT added that the vice president has “demonstrated a commitment to economic policies that support higher wages and expanded worker rights, pushing to raise the federal minimum wage and enact paid family and medical leave.”

Foreign Policy: Diplomacy and Strategic Assertiveness

On the international stage, ChatGPT said Harris would “maintain the Biden administration’s alliance with NATO and strong position to support Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.”

“However,” ChatGPT continued, “she has also demonstrated some nuanced differences, such as a sensitivity to Global South perspectives, which could mean a Harris presidency will focus on a more balanced approach, especially in regions like the Middle East and South Asia. “

It also notes that she “advocates a reassessment of arms sales to Saudi Arabia and an end to support for the conflict in Yemen, while continuing to support Israel with detailed criticism of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.”

Grock’s view of the Middle East was that “Harris advocated a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and called for ceasefires in ongoing conflicts such as Gaza. Its policy may lean toward diplomacy to resolve conflicts.”

Grock also expected that she would “continue or deepen engagement with allies such as Japan, South Korea and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), focusing on countering Chinese influence while strengthening economic ties through structures such as the Indo-Pacific economic structure”.

Grock then predicted her likely commitment to climate change initiatives, expecting “aggressive climate policies, perhaps aimed at further reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and participating in international climate agreements.”

Democratic reforms and judicial accountability

ChatGPT highlighted Harris’ interest in democratic reform, saying she “has proposed Supreme Court reforms such as term limits and ethics rules for judges that are consistent with progressive concerns about judicial accountability.”

Additionally, it says she “supports legislation to ensure that no president has immunity for crimes committed while in office,” reflecting the emphasis on presidential accountability in the current political climate.

Grock suggested Harris could work to “pass a federal voting rights act that expands voting access and protects election processes.” He also noted that her “judicial appointments could be aimed at balancing the court, potentially focusing on diversity and a progressive judicial philosophy” if such opportunities arise.

Cultural influence and public perception

Both ChatGPT and Grock mention the historic nature of Harris’ presidency. ChatGPT noted that her presidency “will likely have a significant social impact, as she will be the first woman and the first person of Black and South Asian descent to hold the office,” potentially “inspiring new generations to pursue public service.” Grock added that her presidency “will likely inspire and influence cultural narratives about leadership, diversity and inclusion in the United States.”

However, Grock also warned of potential polarization, saying her administration “could either continue or attempt to overcome deep political divisions, depending on its approach to policymaking and bipartisanship.” It acknowledged that her policies and leadership style could “influence the direction of the Democratic Party, potentially attracting or repelling different demographic groups of voters depending on her decisions and public relations strategies.”

First actions and implementation strategies

Grock expected Harris could begin her presidency with “executive action on issues like climate change, health care affordability or immigration reform to set the tone for her administration.” She can push for bills that meet her campaign promises, especially in the areas of “economic relief, health care and social justice.”

ChatGPT noted that while her progressive policies are “popular among her base,” she could “face challenges in Congress if partisan divisions persist.” This suggests that Harris’s ability to manage bipartisan resistance may be an important part of getting her agenda through.

Overall, ChatGPT said, “A Harris administration could emphasize progressive changes in health care, civil rights, and wage policies domestically while maintaining a combination of diplomatic pragmatism and strategic assertiveness internationally. This approach could lead to heightened expectations among progressives while testing her ability to navigate bipartisan resistance in Congress and complex global dynamics.”

Grock cautioned that “the exact results will depend largely on the cooperation of Congress, global events and the broader sociopolitical context of her presidency.”
