What you need to know

  • Google is preparing Pixel testers for the upcoming Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1.

  • The company says this build will last until the first quarter of 2025, as the feature will release in March 2025.

  • Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 came out last week with fixes for system crashes, but Google recently confirmed that Android 16 will debut in the second quarter of 2025.

Google is warning all interested Pixel testers about the next QPR test for Android 15.

The company took to Reddit to announce the upcoming launch of Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1. Google says the next beta will be “built on top of” Android 15 QPR1, which is expected to hit devices in December. If you’re a registered Pixel tester in Google’s program, the company details the steps for those who want to stay or want to leave.

Google says that any registered tester who would prefer to receive a stable version of QPR1 must “opt out of the program.” To avoid completely deleting data on your Pixel, the post recommends following the remaining steps:

  • Ignore/don’t apply OTA downgrade update. The description of the OTA message will say “Downgrade”. Opting out will not result in data being deleted if you Not apply an OTA update to an earlier version.

  • If your device is offering the Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 update, Not install the update. Instead, first refuse the programignore/don’t apply downgraded OTA update.

  • Wait for the final public stable version of Android 15 QPR1 (AP4A) which will be released in December.

For those who want to stick around, Google says Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 will be automatically downloaded (likely as an OTA update) once it arrives. The report added that the next build of QPR is due to go out of service in March 2025. In addition, Google estimates that Android 15 QPR2 will be released sometime in the first quarter of 2025.

Apart from “launching soon”, Google has not given a specific launch date for QPR2 Beta 1. However, since QPR1 will be confirmed in December, we may be looking at a January launch for the next one, but we’ll have to wait and see the official post.

Last week, the company released Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 and the patch was full of fixes for system crashes. It arrived a little later than testers (including us) expected. However, the update also provided a fix for the blank screen on Google’s foldable phones that occurred when users unfolded the device.

More importantly, Google’s confirmed QPR2 Beta 1 release schedule could signal the end of the Android 15 beta cycle. Yesterday (October 31), the company released a major Android SDK update, and with it, confirmation of Android 16 arriving in the second quarter of 2025. Considering that the first quarter will run from January to March, Android 15 testing may not go further than that. Android 16’s Q2 launch gives us a chance to play between April and June, as we might see a beta or two before it launches.
