Governor Kelly Announces Over .9 Million Investment in Airport Infrastructure

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Governor Laura Kelly announced Friday that four Kansas communities have awarded more than $1.9 million in infrastructure funding to improve local airports.

Communities received more than $1.7 million in federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Act (BIL) funding through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program.

In addition, these projects are receiving nearly $200,000 in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and the Build Kansas Fund.

The four Kansas airport projects that received funding are:

  • Independence Municipal Airport – Taxiway Rehabilitation
    • Kansas Construction Funding – $37,248.
    • Federal funding allocated – $335,224.
    • The total cost of the project is $372,472.
  • Hutchinson Regional Airport – Construct General Aviation Taxilane
    • Kansas Construction Funding – $97,888.
    • Federal funding awarded – $881,000.
    • The total cost of the project is $978,888.
  • Coffee County Airport – Taxiway Rehabilitation
    • Kansas Construction Funding – $31,863.
    • Federal funding allocated – $286,754.
    • The total cost of the project is $318,617.
  • Elkhart-Morton County Airport – Runway Rehabilitation
    • Kansas Construction Financing – $26,250.
    • Federal funding allocated – $236,257.
    • The total cost of the project is $262,507.

In addition to these four awards, the Build Kansas Fund has awarded critical dollars to fund 23 other federal grants throughout Kansas.

The Build Kansas Fund’s total investment across all projects is more than $28.5 million, resulting in more than $44.8 million in federal grants.

The Kansas Infrastructure Center brings together multiple state agencies and serves as a resource center for Kansas communities to identify best practices to maximize BIL funding opportunities. The Build Kansas Fund provides matching state dollars to projects throughout Kansas that successfully qualify for federal grants under the BIL. In 2023, the Kansas Legislature and Governor Kelly approved $200 million for the Kansas Building Fund to provide state-matched dollars to Kansas businesses and projects to meet federal and local requirements.
