The Thunder sent an ominous warning to the rest of the WBBL after they posted the equal third-highest score in the competition’s history, thrashing the Strikers by 64 runs courtesy of Georgia Fall’s career-best 92.

The day after they beat the Hurricanes, the Thunder returned to North Sydney Oval to score 5-212 – their highest ever – handing the defending champions their second defeat in three matches to start the new season .

And while captain Phoebe Litchfield scored a brilliant 49 off 31, Fall was the main destroyer in just the second half of her career, scoring 92 in just 55 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and three sixes.

Fall reached level 50 only once in her first four seasons with the Heat but dominated on Friday, scoring 1,000 runs in the WBBL before she fell agonizingly short of a maiden century after missing her first two knocks of her new club.

“It’s fun to go out there and have fun. It was nice to be able to bat for a long time because I came out pretty cheap the first two games,” she said after falling to ninth on the Heat last year.

“Definitely (this is the best I’ve done for them). “I was on top, so it’s nice to be at the top of the order, playing my part really well and having support for my shots.”

Fall shared a 54-run partnership in the first stand and then added another 94 with Lichfield as the pair hit the Strikers with a flurry of boundaries to score 30 runs off seven balls in the middle innings.

Her departure did not slow down the scoring, with the hosts quickly surpassing their previous record of 204 at the same ground last year, while the visitors could only post 148 in reply.

Adelaide needed something special from their top order if they were to stage a record chase, but their star batters never got it going as Thunder spinner Sam Bates struck twice in the sixth over to effectively end the contest.

After Ellie Johnston was stuck deep, Bates trapped Strikers captain Talia McGrath up front for a duck as she finished with career-best figures of 4-21.

Katie Mac (51) and Maddie Penna (25) added 52 for the fourth wicket, but all hopes were dashed when Penna was brilliantly caught by Anika Learoyd as she balanced on one leg and tossed the ball back to herself as she scrambled back into the field of play .

The defeat leaves the two-time defending champions with one win from their first three matches, with the Strikers taking on the Renegades on Sunday.

STARS WIN COMPETITION DAMAGED BY RAIN

A record partnership between veteran Meg Lanning and the exciting Rhys McKenna led the Stars to a crushing 32-run win over the Sixers, whose famous batters were scattered in a rain-damaged chase.

A healthy crowd of 2,582 attended a batting masterclass from the Stars as the visitors posted 4-195 with 127 runs scored in the last 10 overs.

Lanning was at her best, anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 58 from 36, but it was McKenna who provided the fireworks, making 52 from 22, pipping Ellyse Perry for back-to-back sixes to bring up her half-century. 21 discount shipping.

McKenna played some wild shots, including a square shot for a six-run lead, and the pair combined for the fastest 100-run partnership in WBBL history.

They took no prisoners on Friday night, with Sixers quick Lauren Cheatle making 28 runs in her final over after her first three scored just 15.

The stage was set for Alyssa Healy, in her first game since the foot injury that prematurely ended her World Cup campaign, to produce a signature shot to the top of the table.

But the Sixers’ wicket-keeper was sent into the game for just a second when she edged Kim Garth’s delivery when she had a four, but Healy wasn’t the only one to miss.

Ash Gardner’s poor form continued when she was dropped just once, taking her tournament tally to three runs from three matches, while Perry finished unbeaten on 31 before heavy rain forced the Sixers off the field. 4-56 in the ninth over.
