As the weather gets colder and the nights get longer, it’s tempting to just stay home and snuggle up with your partner under a warm blanket while watching a good movie. Even if you can’t make it to the famous Rockefeller Center to go ice skating, visiting your local skating rink can be just as fun. Holding hands as you skate on the ice and then drinking a cup of hot chocolate to warm up can make for a pleasant afternoon or evening.

2. Visit a fancy coffee shop and order a personalized blend for each other.

“My boyfriend did this all the time, and although it drove the baristas a little crazy, for us it was just an adventure and fun,” recalls Ikka. “He’d come up and order while I waited at a table or in the car, come back proudly holding a cup of coffee, and I’d—on cue—ask, “What are we getting this time?” I can only imagine that it would be a lot more fun with someone you don’t even know yet.” As an added bonus, some coffee shops have beautiful fireplaces that you can cozy up to while sipping your signature drink.

3. Ride the hills on a toboggan or toboggan.

If weather conditions permit, sledding or sledding is an ideal way to make physical contact without crossing too many personal boundaries. It’s also a great exercise to break up a gloomy winter afternoon. Plus, it’s much more interesting than the usual “coffee date.”

If you’re having too much fun and don’t want the date to end, consider eating some soup afterwards to warm up and continue the good conversation.

5. Visit a bakery and spread some holiday cheer.

The best date starts with a stop at a local bakery or cafe to buy hot chocolate and donuts to give away. Before you do this, set a reasonable budget (maybe $20 for two people). Then head outside to wherever your Winter Wonderland awaits and share your goodies with strangers, the homeless, neighborhood stores, or anyone you know is in need.

It’s a great way to observe your partner’s social skills, and it’s a relatively selfless, pay-it-forward activity. This activity also takes some of the stress and attention off of you and your partner, so you don’t have to look at each other across the table.

6. Cook together

Let’s say it’s a windy winter day and you can’t go outside, try choosing a few new or unusual recipes and then cooking them together. There’s nothing better than enjoying a delicious meal on a cold winter evening and then snuggling up with a movie to help you digest it.

7. Take a cocktail making class.

8. Recreate your first (or key) date if you met in the winter.

If your partner planned it the first time, maybe you can plan it the second time. Be sure to add a few touches that demonstrate how the relationship developed or how the first date played an important role in the development of the relationship.
