Newport County are aiming to top the FA Cup tie

Newport County’s players practiced penalties this week ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup first round home tie against Peterborough United.

Head coach Nelson Jardim confirmed that they have already planned who will take the penalty if the game goes to a penalty shootout.

The tie must be resolved on Saturday and could require extra time and eventually penalties.

Confirming his players had practiced penalties this week, Jardim said: “We don’t know who will be on the field, but we will have a list ready. You have to be brave.”

“It’s one thing to train in training, and another thing to train in a match and at such an important competition.

“Sometimes it has more to do with your emotions and how cold you can be in the moment rather than how well you do in training.”

Newport midfielder Bryn Morris saved a penalty in last Saturday’s goalless League Two home draw with Fleetwood Town.

Jardim joked: “We practiced penalties. Bryn trained last week!

The Exiles head coach is confident Morris, who is worried about his fitness ahead of the match, will shrug off the disappointment if necessary.

“He’ll get better again… he’s good, things like that (missing out) just happen. Have you seen how Cristiano Ronaldo misses a penalty?

“Sometimes we don’t give the goalkeepers enough credit, they work hard too. Some saves come from the goalie, and in Bryn’s case it was a great save.”

“The ball just rolled down the line, just one of those football moments. Now he’s gone, there’s no problem, it’s just part of the game.”
