Madras High Court urges Center to ban filtered tobacco products

The court was hearing a bail application filed by one Aunestraya, who was arrested and remanded in custody in August this year after he was found in possession of 27 packs of Cool Lip tobacco products. State authorities alleged that he purchased Cool Lip products from other states and smuggled them into Tamil Nadu.

The High Court granted him interim bail in September this year.

On October 30, the court issued a ruling making such bail absolute.

At the same time, the Court also expressed concern about the increase in the use of tobacco products among schoolchildren.

It also took note of the helplessness expressed by the State authorities in curbing any smuggling of tobacco and filter tobacco products from other States into Tamil Nadu.
