Veterinary examination Onesmoothoperator | RACING.COM

Geelong Cup winner Onesmoothoperator is under the Melbourne Cup microscope after failing Friday’s vet check with a cut to his heel.

The Brian Ellison-trained import has jumped into Melbourne Cup contention following his Geelong Cup performance but will now face another Racing Victoria vet test on Saturday morning before his Cup fate is known.

A message on the RV on Friday morning read: “Vets at the RV today assessed Onesmoothoperator who had a cut on his right rear heel. The horse was not passing at that time. Tomorrow she will be re-examined after reforging.”

The Melbourne Cup has been hit by a number of veterinary withdrawals in recent days, including unbeaten Irish three-year-old Jan Brueghel and the pair of Trent and Natalie Young – Geelong Cup runner-up Muramasa and Brayden Star.

Further veterinary checks on Melbourne Cup are due on Friday, including a check on the Geelong Cup interpreter, who showed a change in gait when examined on Thursday.
