Gang members convicted of attacking elderly couple at Thousand Oaks mall

Two gang members were convicted this week for their roles in a brutal attack on two elderly people in Thousand Oaks earlier this month, leading to a brutal police chase.

Corey Thomas and Jonathan Requejo, both 18, were sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said. Thomas and Requejo pleaded guilty to several felonies related to the attack, including second-degree robbery and elder abuse. The jury also found several special circumstances were true due to the “great brutality” of the attack, which left a man and woman with serious injuries.

This happened on June 27, 2024. That’s when the DA’s office said Thomas, Requejo and three juveniles brutally attacked two elderly people at the Macy’s store at the Oaks Mall. The attack was caught on surveillance cameras. As a result of the attack, both victims were seriously injured.

The group took the two’s Rolex watches, handbag and mobile phone, then got into the car and drove off.

Officials found their getaway car, but the driver sped off, leading police on a high-speed chase on Highway 101. During that chase, officials said, one of the people in the car threw a gun out the window.

Eventually the car stopped and several crew members ran towards it. Officials managed to arrest all of them.

“While we cannot reverse the irreparable harm done to these victims, we hope today’s sentences send a message that we will prosecute those responsible for violent crimes to the fullest extent possible,” said Deputy District Attorney Haley Moyer.
