A closer look at the equipment used by firefighters as they battle numerous wildfires across the state.

(WFSB) – First responders are working hard to contain several wildfires across the state.

The equipment firefighters use when fighting fires is key to keeping those on the front lines safe.

The equipment is very different from what is used to fight house fires.

“In the back of my car I have a pair of bunker pants, which are essentially a set of boots that come with special pants and suspenders, I wear those, structural fire gloves and a coat if I’m going into a structure fire,” said Glastonbury Fire Chief Michael Tertz.

In total, the gear weighs about 50 pounds for crews fighting structural fires.

“Unlike those who fight fires and wildfires, they typically wear fire-resistant pants, long-sleeve shirts, helmets, eye protection, leather gloves and high-top work boots for walking in the area. – he continued.

Local fire departments such as Glastonbury do not purchase logging equipment due to the infrequency of wildfires.

There have been no wildfires in the city yet, but crews are still prepared for the possibility of one.

“We are surrounded by state forest, so we have 3 vehicles specifically designed as brush trucks with small pumps, as well as 2 UTVs with pumps, as well as rakes, shovels and soft backpacks that can put out debris. fire,” Tertz said.

Officials continue to stress the importance of not burning anything during the dry, warm weather conditions the state is experiencing.

Sparklers, fireworks and fire pits are prohibited due to the high risk of fire.
