High-speed chase ends in head-on collision with patrol car in North Carolina, deputies say

YANCEY COUNTY, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office says a Virginia man has been charged after leading deputies on a high-speed chase in North Carolina.

A high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle from Virginia began and ended in Yancey County on Oct. 28, according to the sheriff’s office. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle collided with a patrol car near Mountain Heritage High School.

Following the crash, officials said traffic was temporarily stopped to facilitate the investigation into the incident. The highway was fully reopened and normal traffic was restored after about four hours.

Deputies said Jason Collin Hatcher, 43, of Bristol, Virginia, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Felony evading arrest or eluding arrest in a motor vehicle.
  • Reckless driving endangering
  • Assault on a government official/employee

Hatcher is currently being held on $50,000 bail.
