Let the Juan Soto hoax begin.

Now all eyes are on the slugger’s impending free agency after his New York Yankees lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was asked about his offseason mindset after Game 5 on Wednesday and didn’t close the door on either team.

“I feel like every team will have the same opportunity when I hit free agency,” Soto told reporters.

He was also specifically asked about the New York Mets and he echoed those thoughts, saying, “I don’t know what teams are going to pursue me. I will definitely be open to this and every single team. don’t close any doors. I will be available to all 30 teams.”

For his part, Yankees teammate Aaron Judge expressed hope that Soto will return to the Bronx Bombers and said, “We’re definitely lucky to have him here and it would be great to continue playing with him because he’s definitely special.” player”.

While Soto kept his options open on commentary, the reality is that not every team will be in the market to sign him.

ESPN Jesse Rogers noted that he likely won’t take the $700 million deal Shohei Ohtani received from the Dodgers last offseason, but will still sign a contract that “will definitely be rich.”

Soto was even asked about possibly signing a deal worth over $600 million and said, “People talk about big money, but we’re definitely going to shake it out.”

Few teams in the league would agree to such a deal for even one player, and there are likely two New York teams on the list.

After all, the Mets and Yankees led the league in 2024 payroll, with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and Dodgers rounding out the top five. The Mets make sense as a potential destination as he is already familiar with New York and could provide the missing piece to help them take the next step after reaching the National League Championship Series.

Pete Alonso is also set to become a free agent soon, meaning they could be looking for another slugger if the power hitter leaves.

They also fit the bill as a team in the middle of the win window, which Soto said is very important.

“I feel like everyone wants to be on a winning team,” he said. “That’s one of the most important things you look up to. You want to be a part of it. Even if you don’t make it to the last team standing, you want to be in all of those (games), so I think that’s one of the most important things I look for.”

Soto is the rare generational superstar available as a free agent in the middle of his 26-year-old prime. He already has a list of accomplishments that includes a World Series title, a batting title, four Silver Slugger honors and four All-Star Game nominations, and he was great for the Yankees last season.

He slashed .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs, 109 RBIs and a league-best 128 runs batted in, then hit .327 with four home runs in 14 postseason games as New York reached the World Series.

The next team to sign him could own him for over a decade. According to him, it could be any team.
