Android 16 could use Apple’s Dynamic Island-style notifications: here’s what we know so far

Google recently released Android 15 to its Pixel devices, but rumors are already swirling about new features expected in Android 16, which is still months away from its official announcement. Unlike Apple’s iOS, Google has traditionally allowed OEMs to customize the user interface, while the stock version of Android remains relatively stable and free of many experimental features. However, that may change with Android 16 as Google is reportedly following the lead of OEMs like OnePlus and Infinix and introducing key notification elements similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island.

According to a recent report from Android Authority, Google will allow apps to create rich live notifications with the Android 16 update. This new notification system will reportedly allow apps to create “chips” in the status bar rather than just icons. While it’s unclear what tapping these notification chips will do, it’s likely that Google plans to add an app-provided dialog that could display more information about the notification or allow quick actions like playing or pausing music, skipping tracks, and more. and all this on one screen.

The new feature was discovered in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release, suggesting that there is a very real possibility that it will appear in the latest Android build. In mockups of various apps provided by Android Authority, it appears that Google’s implementation of Dynamic Island may differ from Apple’s in one important aspect: Android 16 may place a pill-shaped cutout in the empty space in the top-left corner of the status bar. , and on iPhone Dynamic Island covers the area near the notch. However, it’s important to note that this feature is in its early stages and we may see a complete overhaul as we get closer to the launch of Android 16 in 2025.
