Combining Promise with Action – Guyana Chronicles

Combining Promise with Action – Guyana Chronicles

In the annals of our nation’s housing history, it is rare to find a government initiative as comprehensive and transformative as the current People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C)-led housing program.

In just four years, the current administration has distributed more than 38,000 plots of land with a goal of reaching 50,000 by 2025. This achievement is not just an indication that the government is ticking the boxes; it is the realization of a bold and inclusive vision that prioritizes the well-being and empowerment of all Guyanese citizens.

The basis of this program is not only in numbers, although they are impressive. At the core of the PPP/C approach is a sincere commitment to making home ownership a feasible dream for every Guyanese, regardless of their socio-economic status. Each home lot allocated is more than just land; it is the foundation of a nation’s prosperity and a critical platform on which citizens can build wealth and stability.

It’s a contrast that’s hard to ignore compared to the previous administration’s accomplishments. Under the APNU+AFC government, the housing sector lacked the momentum and forward-thinking investment that Guyana sorely needed. It’s one thing to talk about progress, but it’s another thing entirely to achieve results of this magnitude, especially as the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic. Where others may have stalled, this government has accelerated, proving that when commitment is combined with competence, seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome.

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Secretary General of the PPP, has described the magnitude of this transformation well. He pointed to pristine landscapes that are now full of new developments, homes in previously neglected regions, and a forward-thinking approach that not only meets current housing needs, but anticipates the future. The Government’s commitment of $230 billion over four years further underscores its commitment to making affordable housing a reality for all Guyanese.

It is a testament to PPP/C’s strategic planning that they achieve this on a regional scale, ensuring that development is not concentrated only in urban centres. From the Essequibo Coast to Linden and from Rupununi to Bartica, no region is left behind.

This inclusivity speaks to a greater understanding of the unique needs of each community and demonstrates a commitment to bridging the gaps that have long separated our rural and urban areas.

What does this mean for Guyana’s future? The answer lies in communities that will thrive, small businesses that will thrive, and families that will enjoy the security and pride that home ownership brings. It’s not just about building houses; it is about building a stronger and more resilient Guyana.

For those who, as usual, downplay these achievements or blame them on politics, facts speak louder than words. The PPP/C housing program is a master class in management, demonstrating that when promises are backed by action, transformation is not only possible—it is inevitable.

As we move towards 2025, it is clear that this Government’s commitment to housing and economic opportunity will have a lasting impact. Because their ambitious goals are achievable, the PPP/C sets a high bar for what governance in Guyana can achieve.

This is the type of leadership our country needs and deserves—a government that builds, empowers, and lays the foundation for a bright future.
