Powerball tops $30 million mark for fourth time this year

The Powerball jackpot topped $30 million for the fourth time this year, a record for Lotto.

Wednesday’s drawing follows three previous major jackpot wins in April, June and August.

“We have never seen a streak like this before in our history,” Lotto head of corporate communications Will Hein said.

“It is unprecedented for the Powerball jackpot to reach $30 million four times in a year.

“It used to happen twice a year, but not anymore.”

The $30 million jackpot was won in April by a Wellington player.

That victory was followed by a $50 million mandatory drawing in June that netted seven players about $7 million each.

Later in August, an Auckland Lotto player won $44 million, the largest prize ever won on a single ticket.
