Police are praising members of the public who alerted them to suspicious behavior during a robbery in Hamilton.

Two men broke into a house in suburban Fairfield on Monday afternoon, setting off the alarm and alerting passersby.

They were seen running out of the house with the TV, but they threw it over the fence.

Police said the pair left in a white Holden car, which was parked in the driveway of the victim’s home.

Police obtained the vehicle’s description because it was reported to be acting suspiciously earlier in the day.

They found a man and woman at a Dollar Dealers store in Dinsdale trying to sell barbecue.

Both attempted to resist the officer but were pepper-sprayed and arrested without further incident.

Hamilton City District Inspector Inspector Andrea McBeth described the arrest as a “good catch” and thanked members of the public who were so quick to call them for the good descriptions.

“This incident serves as a timely reminder to anyone who leaves their property unattended for any period of time to take steps to ensure its safety.”

A 22-year-old woman was charged with burglary and a 40-year-old man was charged with burglary, resisting arrest, obstructing police and possession of an offensive weapon. Both appeared in Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.

The Holden driver also received several fines, including for illegally parking in a disabled car park.

They both appeared in Hamilton District Court today.
