Legendary coach believes New York Jets defense has gotten worse since Saleh was fired

The New York Jets have had a new problem lately: poor defensive play.

Just a few weeks ago, the Jets decided to fire defensive-minded head coach Robert Saleh midseason. Since then, the team has struggled to find its identity on the football field. As the team looks to move forward under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, New York is entering dangerous territory if it hopes to make the playoffs this season.

As the team prepares for next week, critics continue to weigh in on the recent head-scratching moves by the Jets front office this season. Some of these remarks come from one of the best coaches in NFL history, Bill Belichick.

The former New England Patriots head coach appeared on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show on Monday to discuss the league’s games over the past week. When the topic of the Jets came up, Belichick didn’t hold back on his thoughts on the team’s actions. The 72-year-old believes the defense has taken a big step backward since the Jets’ head coach was fired.

“I think Coach Saleh did a good job with the Jets team and they were a lot better defensively when he was there.”

Overall, it hasn’t been a great two weeks for the Jets. While the team was hoping to make a splash last week on Sunday Night Football on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it fell short and moved to 2-5 on the season after a 37-15 finish.

The Jets defense got off to a strong start against the Steelers on Sunday night. They forced their opponents to punt on four of the game’s first six shots. However, they failed to maintain the momentum throughout the game.

New York allowed 409 total yards of offense to the Steelers, who made a change under center, turning to veteran quarterback Russell Wilson for the first time this season. The team struggled to get Pittsburgh off the field as they were 5 of 14 on third down and 2 of 2 on fourth down. They also lost the turnover battle as the Steelers were left with a clean slate. The Jets are near the bottom of the standings this season with just two interceptions.

However, poor defensive play is just one of their problems.

The Jets’ injuries are also starting to pile up, including an injury to their star quarterback.

who suffered a leg injury in the first half on Sunday. Although he returned to play, he did not appear to be 100 percent for the rest of the competition.

The Jets defense will be looking to make significant improvements on the field as they look to avoid their fifth straight loss next week when they travel to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro to take on the Patriots. A loss would leave the team’s record on the season at 2–6. Only three teams in the Super Bowl era started the season 2–6 and made the postseason.
