Umbrella shooting: Stepfather arrested after little girl accessed gun and shot herself at NW Harris Co., sheriff says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A man was arrested after a 5-year-old girl was able to gain access to a gun and shoot herself late Saturday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

In a social media post, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the shooting happened in the 8400 block of Parasol in Harris County near Houston.

At the scene, police learned that a young girl had found a gun and accidentally shot herself with it. HCSO said she was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery.

At last check, the child remains in satisfactory condition.

The man arrested was identified as the child’s stepfather, the sheriff said. He was taken into custody on charges of possession of weapons and controlled substances.

Other children and adults were present when the girl shot herself, officials said.

HCSO did not say if there were other injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
