Manchester United’s ‘regrettable’ summer transfer already ‘wants out’ as European giants eye January transfer

Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly already set to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

The Dutch international joined from Serie A side Bologna in the summer transfer window. Manchester United invested £36.5 million in the striker.

Zirkzee has scored one goal and made no assists in 11 appearances in all competitions this season, with only five of those starting for Erik ten Hag.

The 23-year-old failed to hit the ground running at Old Trafford. – but there have been many cases of players moving to the Premier League and having a slow start before exploding into life.

However, Zirkze may not be there long enough to find out about it on the Italian site. Calciomercato claiming the Manchester United striker “wants to return” to Italy.

Zirkzee is concerned that Rasmus Hoylund will now start ahead of him, with the Denmark international recovering from an injury suffered in pre-season.

It is understood that Zirkzee is “beginning to regret the choice he made last summer, choosing the Red Devils over various Italian clubs and beyond.”

The report adds that “it remains to be seen whether Manchester United would be open to a loan transfer” as Juventus are “looking for a player with his characteristics”, but Milan have ruled out a deal despite their initial “strong interest”.

Manchester United icon Dwight Yorke is disappointed that Zirkzee and Hoylund are “young boys trying to do a man’s job” who need more experience.

York told Prime Casino: “He’s not there, is he? It’s not there. We played seven games, did our forwards score at all? That tells you. Haaland has scored more goals than our entire strike force combined, which tells you what you need to know.

“We asked these young guys to come and do a man’s job at United. Expectations are really high. Rasmus Hoylund, Joshua Zirkzee, these guys are unknown. There was always someone at United to learn from. When I arrived, Teddy and Cole had already set the standard.

“There is no one with those standards at United right now. These players come in and there is no one around them to learn from. If you don’t attract an established player, you will attract children who will do a man’s work. They are still in the learning process until you are 25 or 26 years old. Then you will complete your apprenticeship.”

York insists Zirkzee and Hoylund are not out to scare defenders, he added: “Of course there are exceptions like Haaland, but we have guys who are still trying to find their footing in the club, let alone the Premier League. We don’t have the presence at the top to threaten the defenders.

“When we played there were always names like Van Nistelrooy, myself and Wayne Rooney. Defenders aren’t expecting it. Now we have Hoylund and Zirkzee, who are not household names, to give you sleepless nights.

“That’s why United are easy to play against: they don’t pose as much of a threat as they used to. Yes, they have good players. Rashford on his day is as good as anyone. Amad, a young guy, looked promising in the game.

“Anthony doesn’t produce. We have a mixture of everything. We all hope that these guys will come out on top, but they are still young guys who are still learning.”
