Wisconsin RB Tavi Walker is quietly having a great season.

Wisconsin running back Tavi Walker remains under the radar, but his numbers have increased over the past few weeks.

The Badgers are currently 5-2 heading into Saturday night’s game against third-ranked Penn State. The team started very sluggishly with a score of 2:2. That start included a blowout loss to Alabama and a missed opportunity against USC.

Then things gradually began to change. Running back Chaz Mellusi left the team to deal with his injuries, Bradyn Locke started to gain momentum as the QB1 after Tyler Van Dyke suffered a season-ending injury…..and Tavi Walker emerged as one of the best players on the field.

Tavi Walker put up big numbers for the Badgers.

Chez Mellusi’s last game for Wisconsin was against USC. Then he walked away. Walker walked up and ran away.

Below are his stats in his last three games:

  • Purdue: 94 yards, three touchdowns and 4.9 yards per carry.
  • Rutgers: 198 yards, three touchdowns and 8.3 yards per carry.
  • Northwestern: 126 yards and 5.5 yards per carry.

For the year, Walker has 565 yards and nine touchdowns. A total of 418 yards and six rushing touchdowns occurred in October after Mellusi left the team.

Walker had one of the best October performances in all of college football, and yet almost no one noticed.

There are several reasons for this. First, Wisconsin hasn’t been in the national spotlight since it lost to Alabama. The team faded into the background with the score 2:2, and for good reason. The team didn’t deserve any attention.

Secondly, Walker started the season by sharing reps with Mellusi. He didn’t have the opportunity to dominate the backfield as the only player in the spotlight.

Now he does, and since taking over he has averaged 139.3 yards per game and two rushing touchdowns per game. These are not just good statistics. This is an outstanding statistic.

The question now is where Walker can go next. Penn State is a very good team. The Nittany Lions have scored 12 points or fewer in four of the team’s seven games this season. Can Walker continue his impressive run? Fans will find out on Saturday night, but for now, the man is dominating college football in October – whether people notice or not.
