Stradbroke Island’s Six Beaches Fish & Grill is throwing a ‘fest’

Stradbroke Island’s Six Beaches Fish & Grill is throwing a ‘fest’

A restaurant needs a reason to exist. There’s a place for a birthday or special occasion, there’s a place for a “sexy date”, a place for the whole family, a place to just get fed, and the pinnacle of happy memories: a place to relax. Six Beaches Fish Grill & Bar on Stradbroke Island is that place.

“We wanted to create a beach restaurant that was friendly and casual for locals and visitors alike. We want to give people great, locally sourced food, and we don’t care if you come straight from the beach or make an occasion out of it,” says co-owner Harry Lyons.

Lyons and his business partner Bodean Shea also own The Prawn Shack restaurant across the street. Six Beaches operates as a 50-seat extension to the iconic small takeaway, with a light, open finish that brings the beach indoors.

Stop in with sandy feet for saucy local rock oysters served with a simple red wine and shallot vinaigrette. Or perhaps fresh squid crumbled in panko, fried until golden brown and served with aioli and sweet chilli. Both dishes are ready with a crisp glass of Riesling, Pinot Grigio and friends. The short list includes options from France, Italy and Australia, as well as local beers and cocktails with gin, tequila, mint, cucumber, citrus and other light, refreshing additions.

This DIY pork belly bao is fun, if a little messy. The buns are large, ready to do the hard work of cooking the pork, which took a long time to simmer in the main broth so the meat could be pulled apart. The skin is offered separately in the form of chips.

On the other hand, the charcoal-grilled Moreton Bay Bugs sit on pesto and roast tomato angel hair pasta, which requires a few cutlery and a bit of fortitude. The salmon with buttered mash and green beans has a British pub vibe, while the Queensland-raised sirloin steak is very old-fashioned with a thick red wine sauce and horseradish mustard cream.
