WELLSVILLE — County school superintendents delivered good news to the Wellsville Board of Education during a meeting Monday.

Middle School Principal Richard Schilling said the middle and high school Sadie Hawkins dances went well and the Veterans Day assembly was a success. He also said that Sport World speaker Wesley Fluellen will talk to students today about how to make the right choice.

Blood testing will be conducted in the high school gym Nov. 25, followed by hearing and vision testing for students on Nov. 26.

Schilling also said the school receives the Bonnie Hoffell School Health Program to support leadership and attendance initiatives, and 52 students in grades seven through 12 made the honor roll with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Elementary Principal Erin Clemmer said every grade, kindergarten through sixth grade, now has a girls’ and boys’ basketball team. She said the students are proud of themselves, with some wearing the T-shirts to school.

Last week the school started a targeted math tutoring program run by the math department, and students are loving the class. She also said the ELA intervention groups are going well.

Clemmer said that starting this week, students will be able to complete community service projects with the church, police department and library to avoid detention or suspension.

Elementary Principal Shelby Householder said first-graders went to Foxcrest Gardens to visit veterans.

First grade students learned about the Macy’s Day Parade and will have a balloon parade over Broadway on November 22nd. The school will also host a Thanksgiving celebration for all students on November 22nd.

Students in kindergarten through second grade are working on a Christmas program that will take place at the middle school on December 12th at 6:00 pm.

Board member Chris Amato said it was good to see students attend the board meeting and addressed seventh and eighth grade president Rayla Lampe, who attended the meeting.

Amato noted that more students, staff and members of the public should attend board meetings.

During the new business portion of the meeting, board members unanimously approved accepting donations for the senior class from Beth Swogger and Ann Cartwright in the amount of $1,090 and Tom Treiko McDonald to the HS Principal’s Fund in the amount of $359.05; a request from the Wellsville Takedown Club to purchase liability insurance through Wellsville Local Schools; adoption of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Emergency Action Plan and NEOLA Policy

During the financial portion of the meeting, board members unanimously approved the financial report, including transfers, fund changes, and “Then” and “Now” certifications.

They also approved additional costs for Southern Local School District students for the 2024-2025 school year; a memorandum of understanding with the Edison Local School District BOE and Paramount Student Services for the Wellsville student, effective October 21; contract submitted by Hill. International Trucks LLC will purchase a 2025 CE school bus at the OMERESA consortium’s bid price; Otis elevator contracts with price adjustments for the periods from November 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024 and from November 1, 2024 to October 31, 2025; and the district’s five-year financial forecast.

On the personnel side, board members approved a Washington, D.C. fellowship to accompany Jonathan Kinkead on a CPC student trip in 2024; resignation due to the retirement of mathematics teacher Richard Salsberry, effective August 21, 2025; as well as several coaches, additional staff, mentors, alternates and van drivers.

Board member Dale Palmer abstained from voting to approve van drivers because he was on the list of approved drivers.

The Wellsville Board of Education meets on the third Monday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Wellsville Jr. High School Media Center, 1 Bengal Blvd. The next regular meeting is scheduled for December 16.
