Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow on game-changing play

Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow on game-changing play

CINCINNATI “Usually, in a 20-point loss where the defense allows the opponent to score on seven of eight possessions, there is no key spot to circle.

But there was a clear and obvious turning point on Sunday afternoon at Pacore Stadium in the Cincinnati Bengals’ 37-17 white-flag loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Trailing by seven after Philadelphia allowed touchdowns on three straight possessions, the Bengals found themselves on third-and-1 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

But with less than 10 seconds left on the clock, the offense was still going strong, forcing head coach Zac Taylor to call a timeout.

The Eagles defense stoned Zack Moss for no gain, and Taylor made a decision that felt more like a vote of no confidence in his defense than a strong belief in his offense, and made it on fourth-and-1 from his 39.

The Bengals forced Ja’Marr Chase to move left to right, cornerback Joe Burrow threw him a screen behind the line of scrimmage, and Philadelphia’s defense swallowed Chase for a 2-yard loss.

Taylor expressed disappointment in being invited to the game.

“The play didn’t work and that’s 100 percent my fault,” he said.

Burrow gave a brief assessment of the play.

“Threw it to Ja’Marr and they caught him,” he said.

Chase wished this call had never happened.

“Just one call, I wish we could take it back and change it to something else,” he said. “But we called and it happened.”

Chase caught the ball more than 3 yards from the line of scrimmage with no Cincinnati players in front of him to block.

Philadelphia rookie corner Cooper DeJean picked Chase out for a 2-yard loss, and even if he missed, cornerback C.J. Gardner was there.

“I don’t mind being aggressive, that’s just what they were at,” Chase said.

The Bengals defense prevented the Eagles from making a field goal, but the 10-point deficit put the Bengals in an even more aggressive and risky mode.

And on the next possession, Burrow hit Chase deep to first down the middle, and backup guard Isaiah Rodgers, who was in the game for the injured Darius Slye, passed to Gardner-Johnson for just the Eagles’ third drive. of the season and Burrow’s third interception.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offense buried the Bengals with another touchdown to make it 34-17.

And after that all that was left was to kill time.

“I felt like we needed to be aggressive,” Taylor said. “It didn’t work. So it’s frustrating. I took it upon myself. This is a situation where I felt we needed to be aggressive and score points per possession considering we were down seven times. everything goes wrong, obviously you’re going to have to think long and hard about this decision.”
