Bride calls friend ‘selfish’ after she says bridesmaids can’t afford ‘Bridgerton’ dresses

A woman and her friend had a disagreement over her extravagant wedding vision, particularly the bridesmaids’ dresses.

In a post on Reddit’s Wedding Drama forum, the woman explained that her friend is expecting a Christmas proposal from her boyfriend, so she’s already starting wedding planning. “And she has big ideas,” the original poster (OP) said.

“The wedding she envisions will cost at least $50K,” the OP wrote, noting that she intends to invite 200 people and have a Regency-era theme. Bridgerton.

Friend wants the entire wedding party (and her family) to be dressed Bridgerton-inspired look, with all the trimmings. “The dresses she wants custom dresses,” the OP wrote. “If you haven’t seen the show yet, imagine the most elaborate fantasy-historical costumes you can imagine. Petticoats, corsets, gloves, giant wigs, etc. She truly wants her wedding to look like an episode of a Netflix show.”

When OP heard the news, she “spent the rest of the night begging (her friend) to be more realistic” about her plans.

“Her bridesmaids can’t afford something like this,” she wrote. “But she told me that I was selfish and that all her friends had good jobs and it would be no big deal for them to shell out a little money for a unique event.”

FP continued to talk her friend out of her big idea, but to no avail. “I kept asking her, but she waved her hand and said she had a certain vision and knew how to make it happen,” she wrote.

Now the OP is “scared” of being a bridesmaid at this wedding. “She’s not even engaged yet and she’s already spending my money!” she ended her fast.

In the comments section, people were firmly on the OP’s side, claiming that it was her friend being selfish.

One person wrote: “It’s quite selfish to expect others to spend their money on your dreams. If she asks you to be a bridesmaid, I’ll argue and assume you’re not Bridgerton rich, so you’ll have to decline. However, if she provides a suit, you will gladly do it.”

Others advised the OP to “step back” and let her friend realize on her own that she might be expecting too much from her future bridesmaids.

“This is her wedding and her delusion. Make a lot of “that’s interesting” comments. But stop raining on her parade. She’ll get a lot of it, but stop picking on your friend,” one person wrote. “Reality is coming soon. You don’t have to insert reality—that’s her boyfriend’s job.”

Another chimed in: “Let her dream and think big. When she starts planning and looking at things, she will learn and change where necessary.”

One Redditor called on the OP to get out of the situation altogether, jokingly writing the words Bridgerton Lady Whistledown’s narrator: “Dear, gentle reader… Please hasten in the opposite direction from your friend. When there is a terrible wedding, you should stay away from the scandal.”

Someone else suggested a possible solution to the dress problem.

“We have a local costume rental place that has so many Bridgerton-themed costumes! (And great quality, not cheap discount store stuff. She makes clothes for every theater production in our state.) The rental cost was $35. for a day,” they shared. “If she wants a wedding like this, she could do a deal with the store and include it in her budget to give her guests the same look.”

Others wanted the OP to provide future updates as the situation evolves. “I want to hear when this ends up on Bridezillas,” someone joked.
