Qantas’ revamped A330 economy cabin features 4K OLED screens

  • Implemented on 10 A330-200 aircraft.
  • All-new Economy Class seats designed for enhanced comfort for Project Sunrise’s ultra-long-haul flights.
  • 13.3-inch 4K OLED entertainment touchscreens for economy class (20 percent larger)
  • Fast USB-C charging and Bluetooth audio connectivity for economy class
  • Free Wi-Fi coming to select Asia routes on Wi-Fi-enabled A330 aircraft from December
  • New decorative lighting and replacement of all curtains and carpets.
  • Business suites with fully flat beds will remain.

Qantas is upgrading 10 of its aging A330-200 aircraft before they are replaced by 12 Airbus A350s and 12 Boeing 787s as part of the brand’s Sunrise project. The upgraded Qantas A330 aircraft operate international flights to Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and other cities.

The upgrade work will begin in mid-2025 at Qantas’ Brisbane maintenance facility.. The first modernized aircraft will enter service before the end of 2025. And The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

This means the redesigned A330-200s will be taken out of production almost as quickly as they arrived, with the brand predicting the planes will leave the fleet from FY27 into the next decade. Most importantly, they share the same seats as the A350-1000ULR aircraft on order, so you can view them as a preview of future aircraft.

Headlining the new Qantas A330-200 Economic upgrade is the new 13.3″ 4K OLED entertainment touchscreenswhich is 20 percent more than the current design. Best of all, it comes with USB-C fast charging and Bluetooth audio connectivity, allowing you to use your own headphones while watching a movie. If you don’t fly an airplane with this capability, we highly recommend the TwelveSouth Airfly Pro, which essentially does the same thing.

From December, free Wi-Fi will also be available on select routes in Asia on Wi-Fi-enabled A330 aircraft. This will work just like Qantas domestic routes, and if you’ve spent as much time traveling between Sydney and Melbourne as we have, it should work very well!

“We have used our fleet renewal program to completely reimagine the flying experience, and these cabin upgrades mean we can bring next-generation features and designs to our existing aircraft,” said Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace.

“Customers can look forward to all-new Economy Class seats that are specifically designed to maximize comfort and provide the features our customers need when traveling internationally. These are the same seats that will be installed on our ultra-long-haul A350-1000ULR aircraft, so this will be a preview of the Project Sunrise flying experience.”

Finally, we have to talk about the seats, because while they still look decidedly uncomfortable, they still have a 2-4-2 configuration, meaning window seats are still the most spacious of any operation of international economy classes.
